Chinese New Year Party

Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday of the year here, sort of like Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one. It centers around the family gathering, with a “Reunion” dinner on the eve of New Year’s Day. Then the next two weeks are spent visiting relatives and hanging out together eating and socializing.

In Singapore, we have two days of public holiday, though many businesses stay closed longer. In China, there are two weeks of public holiday!

We spent the day at a friend’s apartment with extended family – mostly eating, the kids playing games, and watching the adults play mah-jong.

Children love Chinese New Year because they receive “red packets” from all the adults whenever they visit homes. So our boys received about $40 today in gifts, and will get more as we visit friends during the two weeks.
