One of Jim’s Heroes

Back in 1979, I took a year off from school between getting my degree and starting business school. I spent the year on a mission in Asia to solidify some of my Christian disciplines and to get a better understanding of the world, and hopefully make a difference for eternity!

That year stretched into two when the opportunity came up to go on a special assignment to Calcutta, India for 6 months. Along with five other 23-year-olds, we went to mobilize and train the 88 churches in a city of 10 million people for a citywide evangelistic campaign.

The leader of these young Americans was a godly Singaporean man with a heart for evangelism named Sankaran. He left his family in Singapore for 6 months to come shepherd us through the project. What a huge learning experience for all of us!

God used that experience and the rest of the following year to redirect me from business school to seminary, with a heart to help where I could around the world to build Christian leaders.

I took my wife and kids to visit Sankaran on Sunday afternoon and we relived old times. He is now 81 years old and still going strong! When not out sharing his faith on the streets, Sank is doing internet evangelism.

A faithful man who loves God with all his heart and wants to share his love with all his energy. A great role model for all of us – making a difference for eternity!
